The monkey in my epic was the most intense and climactic part of my book. It was written in Chico about ten years ago. The image of a purple female monkey in a cage just came to me like much creative stuff that flies into the mind. The area around the cage is dark so all that can be seen is within the cage. The monkey freezes the main character because she produces sympathy and pity and because this is an exotic animal. The monkey seems totally harmless until it very suddenly lunges at the main character. A major rule in the book is nobody ever gets physically harmed or touched. Therefore the monkey is electrocuted by Christmas lights which are also purple. The monkey is not dead, but the main character has time to leave the area safely. I have no idea why this part got a response from people. Perhaps the question as to why the monkey acted thus. Though the book is a nightmare, it is not the scary horror that we know from films that give it power, but the mockery of the horror genre itself. When it ends we go into a new age self help book in which all is good and positive for no particular reason. A reminder that even in the darkest of all places we know that our lies of hope and affirmation of confidence can lift us suddenly out of the funk of four hundred years. The nightmare was largely the mood anyway.
